Unlimited: Judgment and Contempt
Oct 9, 2023 821
You, then, why do you judge your brother or sister? Or why do you treat them with contempt? For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat (Romans 14:10).
The apostle Paul is speaking of the essential unity of all humanity. We are all sinners ourselves, and we will all be subjected to God’s same standard of judgment.
There are people who like to treat others with contempt because they think that they become bigger people by making others feel smaller. This should never be the way of any follower of Jesus.
Over and above the assertions of liberty for Christians, even on the basis of what they eat and what days they hold sacred, there is a much more important principle. That principle is the love and care that we are to have for others.
We are all sinners ourselves, and we will all be subjected to God’s same standard of judgment.
In a mature Christian community, truly loving and caring for one another will be more important than telling people that they are legalists or that they are wrong in their choices on issues that aren’t central to the Gospel. To do so is to treat them with contempt.
On the other hand, those who are weaker in faith will also naturally be tempted to judge what more mature believers do. Both errors will violate the principle of love and cause dissension in the body of Christ. We do not have the authority to pass judgment on the other on these issues. We will all be ultimately judged by God.
Spiritual Application
Can you think on someone whom you have judged in the last week? Why did you do it? What does it reveal about you? If you can’t think of anyone, ask the Lord to give you his Spirit to search your heart.
