Unlimited: The Night is Nearly Over

The night is nearly over; the day is almost here (Romans 13:12a).

Paul’s reference to “the night” and “the day” refers to the two ages that the Jewish people believed defined all time. The writers of the New Testament understood that the Cross, and specifically the resurrection of Jesus, had ushered in the “turning of the ages.”

In the previous age, wickedness and darkness had ruled. But now was the dawning of a new age: the age of Christ.

The night is nearly over; the day is almost here

Just as day does not come suddenly, the period between the resurrection of Jesus and his second coming was the dawn of this new age. It is a time in which there was still darkness, but the darkness was in the process of being irresistibly overcome by the light. This is the context in which Paul writes that “the night is nearly over; the day is almost here.”

Although, we are now living in the new age that Christ’s resurrection has brought into the world, the ages are still “turning.” That’s why the apostles refer to this world as being in the process of passing away (1 Cor 7:31; 1 John 2:17). The grace of God is being ushered in. The kingdom of glory will soon be revealed.

This is an encouragement for us to hold on to our faith. Thomas Fuller wrote that “the darkest hour is just before the dawn.”

Spiritual Application

What Paul is telling you here is to hold on! The day is almost here. What practices have you embraced to help you hold on to your faith in Jesus until the day fully comes.

Thank you for today’s message. To me, the main practice which I embraced and for that matter which helps me to always hold on to my faith in Christ Jesus is trusting the Lord and doing his wish. And I promise to to hold on to that faith until that day fully comes.
