Verse of the Day Philippians 4 6 with Dave Miers

Philippians 4:6

do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. (ESV)

Feeling anxious? This might be exactly what you need.

Paul is writing these words from prison. He has some very real reasons to feel anxious. What are they going to do to me? Am I ever going to get out of these chains?

And yet his letter to the Philippian believers is filled with joyful hope. Just before this he says, “Rejoice in the Lord always” (Philippians 4:4).

That doesn’t mean anxiety disappears. The presence of joy doesn’t automatically remove all fear. So instead of being anxious, his instruction is to pray.

“In everything” means every circumstance, the big things and the small things. We make our requests known to God.

“Supplication” means asking God humbly, and we do it with thanksgiving because we don’t only bring God our needs. We remember what he has already given so graciously.

When we pray, the promise comes in the very next verse that the peace of God will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

That doesn’t mean anxiety producing situations are instantly removed. But the good news is this: Through the finished work of Jesus, his death and resurrection, we already have peace with God. And when we pray, we entrust our hearts and our minds to the God who guards us.

One way or another, he’s got you.
